Who We Are
About Us
Greystones Presbyterian Church has been serving the population of Greystones and environs since 1887 but that does not mean that we are old and tired. We are a vibrant and growing congregation covering all age groups. We are a group of Christians from many different backgrounds and countries. We worship every Sunday at 11 a.m. and hold weekly home groups. We have a lively youth group for secondary school students, weekly women’s fellowship, men’s breakfasts and a Crafts group. Why not come along and meet us? You would be most welcome.
Our worship style is quite informal with a minimum of liturgy. Our minister does not wear robes and generally does not wear a suit. We celebrate the Lord's Supper / Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month, generally alternating between a formal service where the focus is on the bread and wine and the elements are distributed to attendees in their seats; and an informal service where we conclude with the Lord's Supper and attendees come to the front of the church to receive the bread and wine (grape juice). The invitation to participate in the Lord's supper is extended to all those who love and follow Jesus - this is the Lord's table, not a Presbyterian one.
We love to sing, and music and worship is a key part of our service along with prayer, bible reading and preaching. If you would like to know more about what to expect before attending a service, please visit our YouTube channel
Governance
Greystones Presbyterian Church is part of the Dublin & Munster Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland is led by a Moderator who is appointed for one year by the votes of Presbytery, with each Presbytery having one vote. There are currently 19 Presbyteries in the church.
The AGM of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland is known as the General Assembly.
Presbytery is also led by a Moderator which is a rotating one-year role shared by the teaching Elders (Ministers) of the churches of Presbytery.
Greystones Presbyterian Church is led by a Kirk Session ("Session" for short) comprising a teaching Elder (Minister) and ruling Elders. Elders are elected to serve for an indefinite period by voting members of the church and must complete training before being ordained into the role. Session is responsible for all spiritual matters of the church and is led by our Minister, supported by our Clerk of Session. Elders are assigned a district (a group of church members) and specifically hold these members in prayer and visit them as regularly as their capacity permits and the member desires.
The financial and practical matters of the church are managed by the Congregational Committee, supported by the Session. Committee members are elected by the voting members and typically serve for a period of three years. Committee is led by a Chairperson supported by a Secretary. Members of Committee can be co-opted if needed and often serve on sub-committees such as the Building Committee, Catering Committee or Grounds/Eco Committee.
Session and Committee each formally meet about 6 times a year and an AGM is held once a year for all church members. To be a voting member you must seek to be a member, attend at least one instance of the Lord's Supper during the year, and contribute to church funds. Voting members get to vote at the AGM, vote on new Elders and Committee members, and get to vote on the appointment of a new minister.
